I am running to be one of the two student representatives on the UBC Board of Governors.
The Board of Governors looks over too many things in too little time. In order to effectively represent student concerns you must have an in-depth knowledge of the issues and be willing to voice your concerns. I am the best candidate for this position because I embody these requirements. As AMS President, I am already focusing on the current issues and have experience negotiating and pressuring the University.
I helped pass a referendum that will see a student focused centre of campus complete with a new SUB. I forced the Department of Athletics to re-evaluate their fee structure, which resulted in free student access to the Aquatic Centre and will see a substantial reduction in birdcoop and intramural fees. I helped Friends of the Farm bring the farm issue to the University Admin and am organizing the Great Farm Trek of 2009.
These are just some of the issues I undertook this year and are a representation of what I will focus on this coming year. There is still a lot of work to be down with the Farm and the SUB and electing me to the Board of Governors is the best way to keep these issues student focused.
